Wheelchair Alliance launches new Academy for wheelchair community and professionals

The Wheelchair Alliance has launched the Wheelchair Alliance Academy – an online hub designed to bring together trusted information, practical tools and expert resources for wheelchair users, commissioners and providers.

Believed to be the first of its kind, the Academy brings valuable resources into one online space, with dedicated areas for wheelchair users, and commissioners and providers, helping each audience find advice, guidance and support. Users can explore clear categories covering key challenges and topics, with access to resources including videos, guides, podcasts, apps and other practical tools.

The website has been developed by Philip Hoare, the Alliance’s project manager. As a wheelchair user himself, he has focused on building a site that makes a real difference to wheelchair users’ lives with accessibility playing a key part of the Academy’s development.

Built on a modern web platform, it includes a range of customisation features to support different user needs, including options such as dark and light modes and adjustable font sizes. This reflects the Alliance’s broader focus on inclusion, independence and ensuring that wheelchair users can access the information they need in a way that works for them.

The Academy has been created to bring together a large collection of resources, information and tools for wheelchair users, commissioners and providers,” comments Phil.

“Too often, this information has been fragmented and difficult to navigate. By creating one online space that brings together expert guides, lived experience and practical support, we hope the Academy will make it easier for people to find the help they need, when they need it.

“I am particularly proud of the broad range of voices and expertise represented alongside the large range of topics covered. But this is only the beginning. The Academy will continue to grow, with regular updates and new resources added as the platform develops, ensuring the content remains relevant, practical and responsive to people’s needs.”

Speaking on its launch, Alliance CEO Nick Goldup, said: “The launch of the Academy builds on our work to strengthen the voice of wheelchair users and improves the information, support and systems surrounding wheelchair provision.

“For the first time, commissioners have a single, unified hub for essential information. Historically, they have worked in silos so this platform breaks down those barriers by consolidating critical resources, like our Quality Framework, into one accessible space.

“My hope is that this becomes the definitive, go-to resource for the entire sector. I implore wheelchair users, commissioners and providers to explore the Academy, make use of the resources available, and check back regularly as new content is added.”
