The Wheelchair Alliance has been awarded a grant fund of £331,258 from City Bridge Foundation – London’s biggest independent charity funder.

The grant will enable the Alliance to concentrate efforts on growing its London-focused activities over the next three years, delivering key projects that will bring positive change in wheelchair provision. These include the launch of a national training Academy for wheelchair providers and commissioners, implementation of awareness and lobbying strategies to drive improvement via engagement with wheelchair users, alongside growth of its membership base.

Of the funding received, Nick Goldup, chief executive officer at the Alliance said: “This year marked the tenth anniversary of the Wheelchair Alliance. Although much has been achieved in that time, there is still much work to do in ensuring that wheelchair users get the right chair at the right time.

“We are therefore incredibly grateful to City Bridge Foundation for choosing to support us over the next three years with this amazing funding. It enables us to continue in our efforts to ensure that the voices of wheelchair users continue to be heard at the highest levels.”

City Bridge Foundation, a 900-year-old charity which looks after Tower Bridge and four other Thames crossings at no cost to the taxpayer, has awarded over £840m to charities across London since 1995.

Of the funding awarded to the Alliance, its funding manager Hannan Ali said: “We are investing over £331,000 in Wheelchair Alliance’s infrastructure to help drive its work over the next three years.

“There will be a fantastic programme of activities that will aim to ensure better outcomes for wheelchair users to lead independent lives and to ensure that the voices of wheelchair users are heard.”
